I am currently working on the splash/header image for the Ergo Facebook page. This illustration will probably also be used in the packet I send to newspapers and magazines. In that document, the drawing is used as an image preceding the synopsis of the comic strip, which is why you’ll see the word “Synopsis” sketched in the bottom right hand corner. This is later replaced with the logo (which I’m still not super happy with. I think the gear “O” is too thin.)

Here’s the first pencil sketch for the drawing, 3h and 2B pencil on some sort of soft sketch journal paper:

I like the volcano power generator in the background, but it needs to get moved a bit to the left. Also happy with George’s jumpsuit and the overall dynamic of the drawing. Perspective is a bit too flat, I think. The transition from the large plants at the bottom of the picture to the small plants may be too abrupt. The building to the right of the volcano cramps the drawing too much. Probably going to axe that.

On to the second iteration. I scan the original sketch, convert the lines to blue and print it out on large tabloid/A3 paper.

I like the plants in the foreground, and the strange Dr. Suess-esque triple palm trees. Somehow, I often seem to spend more time on the left side of the drawing than the right side. Maybe because I’m more focused at the start of the drawing. But now that I look at it, perhaps the left side is too busy, while the right side is too plain. The river’s too large, and needs to wind more. The smoke from the volcano, again, too detailed. George’s head is a bit too far to the left. I like the giant venus fly trap at the bottom.

Now the third iteration. I’ve gone ahead and inked George and the Arrowbot. They’re pretty much good to go. I’ve added some Ergo Industries buildings and curved the river.

George might need to get moved a wee bit to the left, but all in all, I’m happy with the balance in the drawing, and the contrast between the jungle wilderness and the advanced Ergo tech. The little monkey from the previous sketch didn’t make it in, because I felt like he averted the eye from the flow of the drawing. Logo is in place, but sort of clashes against the gear building in the bottom right.

More progress coming soon! Time to finish the inks.
